Woo-hoo!
By my own (probably skewed) analysis, Critters seem to make sales
about ten times as often as non-Critters! Here is some good news that members
have reported:
If you have something to report,
tell me immediately!
Congratulations to...
- Heidi Elizabeth Smith, who reports "I sold my review of _Thrice Bound_ by Roberta Gellis to Strange Horizons. - Robert A. Sloan, author of Raven Dance, who reports "I entered the 2001 Anvil Press 3 Day Novel Contest".
{Over Labor Day Weekend, 2001, while friends attended WorldCon or the Pennsic War, I entered the Anvil Press annual "3 Day Novel Contest." Beginning at midnight Sept. 1 and ending at midnight the end of Sept. 3, I ran a literary marathon... and the principle of Special Olympics where everyone's a winner has a special meaning for that marathon. In those three days I completed "Rites of Chavatekyar" - 37,640 words, 216 manuscript pages, pure high fantasy. Two other writers, Jennifer St. Clair Bush and Jenny Shafer, 'ran' with me on the main discussion board at hollylisle.com - all three of us finished and all three of us kept up a running chapter synopsis and wordcount. With 300 entrants last year, an average length of 100 pages for submissions and a worldwide field, this contest is important. Everyone who finishes wins - and readers can look forward to Rites of Chavateykar next year whether I take the Grand Prize or not. There will be a free to enter 3 Day Novel Contest during 2002 on www.hollylisle.com site warming up for next year's Anvil Press competition.

{This is my third sale to Artmeis Magazine, which is my second fiction sale (second sale was non-fiction).
By the way, Artemis is being published by DNA Publications, which right now has a push on to get more of the magazines into bookstores.
So if your favorite bookstore or magazine dealer doesn't carry Artemis, I strongly recommend that you talk to the manager and see if they can't get it in.
Not only is it a good market for SF (does not have to be space related), it also carries the latest developments on space exploration and habitation.
If you write or intend to write on near-term space SF, it's a must-read.

- Roxanne Hutton, who reports "sold an SF related non fiction piece to Artemis".
{I've been playing with the idea of a "space railway". This would be a very large mass-driver, i.e. a linear electric motor long enough to start just sunward of Earth's orbit, go all the way around the sun and back again, forming a giant ring.
It's been part of the universe I've been working on that includes the Crittered stories "Mandy", "Virgi", "As Those Who Can See", and "Foil Dive", which Artemis published in the Spring '01 issue.
Anyway, I wrote an article about the concept, which is fiction in that no serious engineering studies exist, let alone the thing itself, but non-fiction in the sense that it proposes the idea as one that might work, and might be the way we will go at some time in the future.
Artemis has accepted the article for publication. What fun!

Trust me on this one.
These are my 18th and 19th on-line publications for 1999.
By the way, I apologize for the shockingly few critiques I've done

I have made stories shorter before at the request of editors, and find it odd that this didn't happen this time. (Anyone who wants to know who this story ends, e-mail me.) Oh, after I had sent out this story I wanted to find out more about the world in which the story takes place. } [Sep 1999]
- Kevin James Miller, who sold his (Critter'd) short story, "His Will Be Done" to The Fifth D . . . .
{Nothing personal, gang, but the editor took the pre-Critter'd version of the story. This is one of the stories that got some "What sort of sick, immature son of bitch are you?" type comments. I have lots of different teachers, and one of them is J.G. Ballard. He has written something as elegant as "Message from Mars" and a nasty piece of work called "Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan." Looking at my work, as tender and as sweet "Mrs. Selby Takes a Lover from another Galaxy" is that's how vicious "His Will Be Done" is. I work both sides of the street, folks. If you can't tolerate that, let me know and I'll go play somewhere else.
